THE TECH CHRONICLES

Autodesk is the company behind some of the best 2-D and 3-D design software out there, including Sketchbook Pro for the PC and Mac. Sketchbook Mobile is now available for $2.99.

I've played with some fun doodling apps on the iPhone but they've been largely time killers. Not the kind of programs you want to do anything serious with.

But Sketchbook Mobile is one powerful piece of software. It's built from the original Sketchbook engine and provides you with a lot of tools to build sophisticated sketches.

You can lay down up to six layers (six for iPhone 3GS devices and three for iPod Touch and older iPhones), which creates a lot of options.

I liked being able to just lay down a photo and then trace over it. You can also get access to a wide range of tools, including 25 brushes and settings as well as fully customizable color selections.

The interface is intuitive and allows you to get very detailed with the image. You can change the width of brush strokes and the app can sense how hard your finger strokes are and translate that pressure into the final image.

The app is awesome for illustrators, designers and amateur artists who want to come up with something on the fly. This isn't just digital cocktail napkin drawings, these are things you'd want to export and keep.

For the 3GS, images can be made on a canvas of up to 1024 x 682, which is big enough for a tablet. Now if we could get Apple to make us a tablet ...

But seriously, I'm having a lot of fun with Sketchbook Mobile and at $2.99, this might be one of the best deals around.
